Be prepared to discuss compensation on every interview?

When I construction interview and the talk turns to money - after I have already delayed talking about construction salary until the construction interview - I get tongue-tied when I state my range and the construction interviewer says or implies my price is a bit more than the job's budget. What can I say? Your comeback: The range I quoted is the going rate, but is pay the only issue keeping us from a job agreement? If it is, I am sure we can make this work for both of us. Let's first decide if I clearly understand your requirements and if my skills meet your needs. Then backtrack and continue to negotiate. If you don't get the offer, try to leave the door open for a callback or future position.
