Synenco Energy Inc. was incorporated in 1999 to acquire and develop oil sands resources in the Athabasca Oil Sands region northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Since its inception, Synenco has advanced steadily toward the goal of developing the Northern Lights Project. In May 2005, Synenco and Sinopec, China's largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products, formed the Northern Lights Partnership to further develop the company's resources into the Northern Lights Project. Synenco is the managing partner and holds a 60 per cent partnership interest in the Northern Lights Partnership. The Northern Lights Partnership lands also contain significant coal resource that represent an additional potential asset of the project. Although there are no coal development plans at this time, rising energy prices and regional energy demand could lead to the development of the coal resource in the future. In addition to assets held in partnership, Synenco also holds on its own behalf an oil sands lease for 9,216 hectares (93 square kilometres) of land northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The company's corporate office is located in Calgary, Alberta.
