CHP is Combined Heat and Power -- the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from a single fuel source. Because CHP systems are able to recover "waste heat" produced from the generation of electricity, they offer a profound increase in overall thermal efficiency, compared to a central electrical utility. For any consumer that purchases electricity from a utility and produces heat energy on site (i.e. from a boiler), CHP could result in lower overall energy cost, a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission, and a means of conserving existing energy resources.
