PHILIP MORRIS, USA Richmond, VA 1978-2008
Associate Principal Engineer, Process, Projects & Technology (1999 – 2008)
Responsibilities were split between managing a process development engineering group and managing large scale projects throughout the company’s operating facilities. Supervised the work of five engineers, up to ten project resources, and contract engineering and construction contractors.
ï‚· Facility Relocation Project - Managed the resources and contracts required for a $100,000,000 project to reduced manufacturing costs by $10,000,000 per year and to provide a new $15,000,000 annual revenue stream. Through innovative project planning, the revenue stream was accelerated eighteen months.
ï‚· Led project team that implemented the process modifications and business processes required to meet a ten-thousand fold reduction in the product contamination specification. The project team utilized the new test method as part of a comprehensive test protocol to evaluate process modifications based on Six Sigma methods. $6,000,000 worth of stockpiled product was recovered, and an annual product stream worth $11,000,000 was redirected back into production.
ï‚· Managed cross-functional team to establish a commercial supply for activated carbon beads and fibers for reduced exposure cigarette program. Prepared investment and operating cost estimates to evaluate the feasibility of producing these products in house and to understand the cost structure for potential suppliers. Managed team of engineers that developed a process to produce the activated carbon beads. Evaluated the capabilities of several international suppliers of activated carbon beads and fibers. Provided technical support for the negotiation of supply contracts with vendors in Germany, China, and Japan.
Senior Project Manager, Process Engineering (1996 – 1999)
Managed process-engineering group within the Central Engineering Department, and directly supervised up to ten project engineers as well as 10 department engineers. Project manager and project process engineer on several technology implementation projects at operating facilities in the United States and Western Europe.
ï‚· Managed the project design team of eight engineers and two contract engineering firms with more than 100 design engineers through the design, procurement, installation, and start-up of two expanded tobacco plants at two separate sites on the east coast. The project included the implementation of an alternative processing technique that was developed during the project execution. Both facilities were completed under budget ($200 million) and on schedule.
ï‚· Directed the start-up of the new $100 million expanded tobacco international processing facilities in Bergen op Zoom, NL and Berlin, DE. Organized the start-up resources into a plan in Microsoft Project that was fully integrated with the construction schedules. Manager Maintenance & Engineering, Bermuda Hundred Processing Facility (1988 – 1996)
Established and managed a maintenance and engineering department for a new operation facility. The department included 20 craftsmen and 10 salaried personnel. The department responsibilities included maintenance of the plant assets, management of the ten million-dollar department budget, and management of plant level projects.
 Developed and implemented staffing plan for the maintenance and engineering department for a green field production facility. Managed the maintenance and engineering department at the world’s largest supercritical fluid extraction commercial facility. The department included 20 craftsmen and 12 salaried employees, and it had an annual operating budget of approximately $10,000,000.
ï‚· Manage $25,000,000 project to design and construct process modification to utilize idle equipment at supercritical fluid extraction commercial facility. The process was commercialized concurrent with the development. The project was shutdown quickly when the project financials changed suddenly.
Senior Engineer, Process Engineering (1986 – 1988)
Served as process/project engineer on several process implementation projects.
ï‚· Designed, constructed and started a supercritical fluid (CO2) extraction plant for the manufacture of nicotine-free tobacco ($200,000,000 budget). Translated the pilot operation results into a manufacturing process. Led the design team of five Philip Morris engineers working with M. W. Kellogg in Houston, TX to complete the detailed process design. Led the plant start-up while serving as an integral member of the start-up team. Organized and established the maintenance and engineering department for the manufacturing facility during the construction and start-up of the operations.
ï‚· Designed, constructed and started a supercritical fluid (CO2) extraction pilot plant for the removal nicotine from tobacco ($15,000,000 budget). Translated the lab-scale process developed by the research organization into a process with equipment and controls flexibility needed to evaluate a wide variety of process options. Supported concurrent design and construction followed by hands-on start-up of the process. The detailed design and construction activities were executed through third party contract firms.
Process Engineer Supervisor, Richmond Manufacturing Center (1981 – 1986)
