WORK EXPERIENCE
September 08 – Present: MCR Steelworks
I am currently working in the estimating department of MCR Steel Works based in Kildare. My daily role saw me developing cost estimates and submitting contract valuations for the current projects on the register at that time and also selection and payment of sub-contractors for the current projects on the register at that time.
o The pricing process included carrying out take-offs from architect’s drawings and then entering the current market rates in against the amount of that particular material required.
o When awarded a contract I would begin the creation of a Bill of Quantities and validate it against issued for construction drawings. The work completed was then shown as a percentage against the original contract sum and the monthly valuation could be sent into the main contractor along with any variations to the works.
o I carried out final measures based on actual installed quantities by means of using the issued for construction drawings and on site measurements.
o In order to get monthly valuations agreed I was involved in the preparation of variations which meant that these had to be identified priced and reviewed with the client. This was a regular occurrence and a good understanding of the works was necessary so that any scope modification would not be missed when the variations were agreed upon with the client.
o I have been involved in sizable developments such as the P. Elliott Development: Clancy Quay in Dublin. MCR were the main steelworks subcontractor for the development, with steelwork which included, balconies, stainless steel & glass stair railings which is valued at approximately €3,000,000. The overall value of the development is in the region of €35,000,000. Other developments include: The O2, Dublin.
Working with a sub-contractor helped me develop my estimating knowledge and has improved greatly my team working skills. It also gave me the opportunity to further enhance my computing skills due to the daily exposure I had to use Microsoft excel, word and Build-soft. Reviewing contract terms and conditions, letter writing and record keeping have also improved immensely through working for MCR.
September 06 – September 07: McInerney Homes
In my placement year work experience I worked for McInerney Contractors based in their Waterford office and their construction sites. I gained valuable experience as to how the industry works and received a lot of guidance from senior personnel of the company.
I was involved in the construction of a large housing development, Crann Ard, Glencarra, Clonmel Co. Tipperary. This site also incorporated a Childcare Crèche and an office and retail block. The value of this development was €5,000,000.
o On site daily I would measure work completed by several different sub-contractors and also discuss with them payment issues. Microsoft Excel was used in order to present my work to the project QS.
o I developed up to 8 separate folders for each sub-contractor on site containing their contract details, insurance details, method statements, health and safety statements, payments issued and copies of their measured work.
o It was also very important for me to develop a very strong understanding with the different types of contract as they dealt with completion dates, payment periods and retention figures.
o Communication with the project QS, site foreman and the on site sub-contractors at site meetings were a weekly occurrence in which I developed minutes of these meeting and these also helped expand my personal skills.
o I would carry out my own measures of the works fully completed and then receive the sub-contractors final invoice for this work. I would review and negotiate variances, discrepancies and contentious differences between the sub-contractor and us. Agreeing final figures was often a lengthy process and sometimes quite difficult and therefore my figures had to be very accurate and clear.
For the final three months of my work placement I was involved in the subcontract selection process for the new McInerney housing development in Thurles called Hayfield Manor, This was a unique housing development which also incorporated childcare facilities and proposed future office developments.
My duties involved sending various subcontract enquiries to the various trades, compiling and comparing my prices and then deciding with the project QS after stringent comparisons and feedback who to appoint for the upcoming works.
Also during my time at head office I would help the estimating department with tendering for several different projects. I would take different elements of the Bill of Quantities and re-measure them from the drawings provided and try and highlight areas where costs could be reduced or where the Bill has provided for unrealistic sums of money. Risks and contingencies were looked at in the possibility of making potential savings.
