Joined the Marine Corps in 1964 and attended boot camp at San Diego, California, and graduated from a Regimental Honor Platoon. After taking advanced combat training at Camp Pendleton, California, was attached to the Third Marine Air Wing at El Toro, California, for duty. After completing one year requested and received a set of orders to duty in.
Vietnam with “A” Company, 3rd Engineering Battalion as a Combat Engineer in construction of shelters, storage facilities, bunkers, bridges, roads, runway, landing zones, conventional explosives and mine field maintenance. Mastered the correct operation and maintenance of numerous pieces of heavy equipment to include heavy and light dozers, pans, crawler cranes, light and heavy forklifts, front end loaders (track and tire mounted), and Multi-Fuel trucks.
After returning to the United States, re-enlisted for six more years and received a set of orders to Marine Security Guard School at HQMC. Graduated in the top 10% of class and assigned to the American Embassy in Kingston Jamaica and Santo Domingo. At this time I was selected a member of the team providing protection with the secret service for Vice President Nelson Rockefeller on the South American Presidential Tour in July 1969. Reassigned to Marine Corp. Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 2nd Force Service Regiment, 2nd Engineering Battalion as NCOIC of Camp and Base Maintenance Carpenter Shop until honorably discharged in July 1974.
