WORK EXPERIENCE
Sept 1986-Sept 1990 Employer – Robert R Roberts (Leeds) Ltd
First two years worked as an estimators assistant, photocopying and sending out enquiries, worked with a senior estimator and had hands-on experience taking off and pricing work with assistance and checking.
Remaining time at Roberts involved pricing work, with taking off where necessary, tenders up to £1M using both tradition methods and a computerised estimating system (ConQuest).
Reason for leaving No chance of promotion and new job provided a company car.
One of my first tasks was to set-up and use Turners new computerised estimating system (ConQuest).
Priced work mainly Bills of Quantities on the computer up to £4M in value with less assistance as time progressed, up to full responsibility for sending out, pricing, preliminaries and settling the tender with management. Built a new library of resources for the computerised estimating system, which entailed adding and deleting descriptions, rates and resources.
Reason for leaving After six years I felt it was time for a change, and Roberts, who I worked for before asked me to join them to increase estimating turnover.
Aug 1996-Jan 2001 Employer – Roberts Construction Ltd
Position – Estimator/Senior Estimator
Continued pricing Bills of Quantities, Drawing and Specification and Design & build tender from £100K to £4M. And was involved in progressing the computerised estimating system in terms of advanced training in ConQuest and selection of new hardware for the company. Later I undertook a full overhaul of the estimating system’s library.
After a take over in 1998, I was pricing work up to £7M, some of which entailed pre and post tender meetings with the client and design team. These meetings made me more aware of the duties of other parties in the Construction Industry, and I became less daunted in meetings, in some of the meeting I was Roberts only representative and was empowered by Roberts to make decisions on behalf of the company.
Reason for leaving Better promotions chances available, and salary.
Jan 2001- Sep 2004 Employer – Caddick Construction Ltd
Position – Senior Estimator
Salary £37K + 5K Own Car Allowance
Have been pricing traditional tenders up to £5M, budget tenders for Developers up to £15M and Design and Build tenders up to £14M. Pricing mainly Bills of Quantities, and using the computerised estimating system. Due to the nature of Developments work and D&B tenders for preferred clients, I am requested to attend many pre and post tender meetings and then further re-pricing/negotiations as required.
Sep 2004-Mar 2007 Employer - Totty Construction Ltd
Position – Bid Manager
Salary £50K + £5K Car Allowance
As Caddick, with the added responsiblilty of managing assistant estimators and support staff, as Bid Manager also responsible for ensuring other members of design team work on my behalf to ensure robust tender bids.
Reason for leaving When asked by a former director to build an estimating department at HAM and assist in building up the company, I thought it an exciting project that I would like to be involved with.
Mar 2007-Nov 2007 Employer – HAM Construction Ltd
Position – Estimating Manager
Salary £56K + £5K Car Allowance
Now undertaking roles as previous employment, but now assisting in raising turnover and profit, running the estimating department, with direct discussions with the Directors regarding recruitment, professional appointments etc. Providing cost plans for developers and meetings with them to discuss scheme details allowances and potential savings.
Reason for leaving Unfortunately HAM went into administration. Former employers gave me the position at Irwins.
Nov 2007-Present Employer – Irwins Ltd
Position – Estimator
Salary £53K + £5K Car Allowance
I was offered a role by previous Employer when HAM went into administration. Undertaking estimating of various projects ranging from £25,000 to £5,000,000, utilising various procurement types. Meetings with Clients design team to discuss projects and assist with value engineering.
INTEREST AND ACTIVITIES
I am married with two children aged 16 and 13 and most of my spare time is spent with them, however I am undertaking a Visual Basic computer programming course at home at present.
Holidays in Florida to see my relatives.
Nascar racing.
I enjoy swimming and cycling and golf, whilst at Roberts I undertook various sponsored events to raise money for Roberts ‘Chosen’ Charity at the time.
I enjoy reading biographies and science books, drinking fine wine and whenever time permits watching Leeds’ football and rugby league matches.
OTHER SKILLS
Clean driving licence.
Competent in the use of ConQuest, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Can speak and understand a little Spanish.
AIMS
I would like to combine a job utilising my estimating and computer skills, and if the right opportunity arose I would consider a move to the U.S.A., Australia or Spain.
