Over the course of my thirty eight-year career as an architect, I have played a leadership role in several large-scale, multi-hundred-million dollar projects, each of which came with its own challenges of design, construction, coordination, budgeting, and management. My most recent project, Wisconsin Place in Chevy Chase MD, represents a culmination of the skills and experiences I have developed throughout my career. It is also indicative of the high level of professionalism and clear-headed coordination I can bring to bear on complicated and high-profile projects.
I have recently completed the construction effort at Wisconsin Place. We broke ground in the fall of 2004 and I have been deeply involved in the challenge of coordinating this large mixed use project and keeping it moving forward.
In addition to detailing, budget oversight, and management of contractors and other consultants, a significant part of my role has been coordinating the interests and demands of all interested parties. Over the course of this project I have coordinated with four contractors and five architects. Each of the three owners (NED, Boston Properties and ArchstoneSmith), along with Federated as a individual owner of the Bloomingdale’s space brings to the table years of experience, but also their own design teams which I have worked and coordinated with to create a smooth-flowing construction process.
Through Wisconsin Place, I have had significant direct experience with Turner, who was the contractor building the underground garage, designed by Arrowstreet, which serves as a podium for the structures above. The structures above consist of Retail buildings built by Turner Garage Team and again designed by Arrowstreet, a Bloomingdale’s built by Buck Construction and designed by KCA architects, a high rise Residential Tower constructed by Turner Residential Team designed by SK&I architects and a high rise Office Tower and Retail which was constructed by Balfour Beatty and designed by EHA architects. I worked closely with Balfour Beatty’s construction team, coordinating the interface between the Garage podium that supported the Office Tower. I reviewed and approved shop drawings, issued relative sketches in response to questions or construction issues and attended early site meetings to respond to project issues with Balfour Beatty, Boston Properties and EHA.
I am confident and ready to take on the task of another major project, with all of its opportunities and complex demands. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science would be an excellent showcase to apply both my technical skills and my ability to coordinate and manage the needs of a complex project. I feel confident that with my many years of experience on several large projects and different building types, I can fill a key role within the GFF construction administration team, contribute to the successful completion of this project and enhance the sustainability of Good Fulton and Farrell for the long term.
I am looking forward to meeting with you and conversations regarding the opportunities available here in the Dallas area.
Best wishes
John Shortall
