I have been involved in construction safety since 1993. To be effective in this position requires a great deal of internal customer service to those that we are to protect and to train. I excel in communication with the trades in regard to the OSHA Standard. Although I do not speak a second language, I have dealt extensively with non-speaking English employees. It is not just the language barriers; you have to address customs when working in this environment to achieve compliance.
In the inspection process, I work with the crews and show them what I am looking for, teach them why it has to be corrected. I have found that if they understand my job to some degree, they are able to work in a more productive manner:
Fewer Red Tags by having the proper tools and equipment in working order.
Knowledge and qualifications to use the equipment or process.
Less down time waiting for equipment to be repaired.
By controlling the risk exposure to injuries, saving time and cost increases.
Limiting OSHA citations through training and inspections.
SUMMARY
Being pro-active in the safety process I aid the job in controlling cost overruns, scheduling and time delays by utilizing the safety processes: Training, JSP, JHA, Permits, Inspections, Communication… . The skills I bring to the position are honesty, integrity, internal and external customer service skills. Working knowledge of the construction process. Flexibility in hours and travel requirements, I have worked in past positions all shifts. I have volunteered for the remote locations or traveling the past 2 years going between Nevada and California. I have also found this to be a very educational process in dealing with the workers. And, in this field you have to have common sense. The degree is great and I am working towards that at this time, but I also have the working knowledge for the processes used.
