WORK EXPERIENCE
The majority of my experience is in the construction field. My history includes working as a laborer, roofer, ironworker, glazer, and finally as a carpenter, having gone through the Carpenters Apprenticeship training program through CCAC. I continued my education at CCAC and went on to study construction estimating and received an Associate’s Degree in Construction Science.
I started as a roofer for a small non-union company before spending a year with a union roofing company doing hot roofs (nasty work). From there I moved on to laboring and spent the next ten years working for large companies such as Navarro Corporation and Mosites Construction. As a laborer, I initially worked as a carpenter‘s helper, running for materials and cleaning up. Along the way, I did some demolition, which I liked, but it was very dirty and dusty work. Eventually, I found my way into the concrete crew where I stayed until one of my bosses suggested that I try to get into the carpenter’s apprenticeship program. That was about 22 years ago.
I spent most of my 4-year apprenticeship working on the new Pittsburgh Airport, mostly with PJ Dick Corporation. It was a huge job and very interesting because it dealt with almost every phase of the trade. I started working on the concrete walls for the tunnels that the people moving trains would run through. That was my first experience with gang forms that were set with cranes. From there I moved up to the Midfield Terminal project where we built miles of foundations with Symons panels and wood fillers. It never got monotonous because there were a lot of different angles and elevations. After the pre-cast was set, we moved up to do about a million bd. ft. of roof blocking, followed by inside work involving expansion joints; big metals ones that had to be cut to fit. All this had to be done without restricting traffic flow from other workers walking through and moving materials. We then moved back outside for sidewalks and other site work, almost the entire way around the terminal. From there, we moved inside for some really nice work involving doors, hardware, railings, and monitors for flight information. Work was completed in the US Air Club and some of the shops. All in all, you can see what I mean about being such a great job because of the diversity of work, and because almost everything was done over and over; a great chance to hone my skills.
I worked a few more jobs for PJ Dick, but when work slowed, I jumped at the chance to work at the new Allegheny County Jail. I was placed on the tunnel crew, called that because the forms we used were collapsible steel boxes that resembled a small tunnel. We used tower cranes to place and strip them, and we poured concrete everyday. It took us over a year to do all the cells and utility chases. This was a nice job for me and I learned a lot about cranes.
I worked many jobs through the union hall after the jail and I learned quite a bit about the operations of the union. I was the steward on quite a few jobs over the next ten years and even worked a few jobs as foreman/steward for some small out-of-town contractors. During this time period, I worked mainly concrete jobs, which was my favorite, and quite a few drywall and metal stud jobs too. Mixed in were some set-up jobs in retail stores which included building shelves or doing casework (display cases). I also worked in the shop for Kauffman’s Dept. Store in downtown Pittsburgh.
Throughout the 90’s I attended community college a few nights a week. It was tough working all day, going to school at night, and finding time for my wife and two sons, but I learned a lot in that time. Unfortunately, at the time, an estimating or project managing job was hard to find. The few that were available offered minimal pay; much less than I was making as a carpenter. Therefore, I decided to continue working as a carpenter and went to work for Carl Walker Construction. They were a small and upcoming company that specialized in parking garages. They did both old and new work, and for the next ten years they kept me busy. Due to an unfortunate event, I left Carl Walker Construction. After a few jobs out of the union hall and a dry spell in the business, I am currently seeking work. You can see that my work history involved many types of work and that I have seen and done many different jobs. Over the years, I have taken numerous journeyman courses through the UBC and CCAC, some of which include CPR, asbestos abatement, OSHA 40, and welding. I have over 30 years experience in the construction field and have gained a wealth of information. I would be a great asset to you and your company.
PERSONAL INFORMATION
My family and friends are very important to me. My wife and I volunteer at the Washington County Health Center, visiting senior citizens with various ailments. I attend bible study and am a member of The Holy Name Society at our church.
I enjoy following sports, especially the Pittsburgh teams, college and pro. I frequently attend high school football and basketball games. Coaching youth in the Chartiers-Houston Baseball Organization was one of the many things I enjoyed as my sons grew. I served as president of both the youth baseball and basketball associations.
I enjoy tinkering with woodworking projects and am currently learning wood carving. My wife and I enjoy going to flea markets where we search for antique tools, which I collect.
