Work Experience
Building Component Salesman (May 2004 – October 2008)
W. Kost Manufacturing Co., Gilberts, Illinois
I worked as an outside salesman for a major supplier of pre-engineered wood and steel building components for residential and commercial construction. During this four-year period, my annual sales rose to $4,300,000. I had a total of 73 customers representing 117 projects plus hundreds of one-time jobs. My customers ranged from local, one-time builders to nationally recognized companies. Projects I was involved with included single and multi-family residences, schools, hotels, and shopping malls.
Duties:
• Did material take-offs and prepare bids/estimates for wall panel, floor and roof truss systems for single and multi-family homes, as well as commercial projects.
• Laid out truss systems and engineering trusses to verify the structural adequacy of the products prior to bidding.
• Interacted with customers and their architects and engineers to resolve questions that arose due to incomplete or incorrect plans and specifications.
• Had daily contact with customers and their engineers, architects, carpenters and building officials to resolve any questions or problems that occurred during the building of the structures.
• Made initial contact with prospective customers.
• Prepared AutoCAD layouts for customers to review and approve.
• Created truss engineering drawings to be submitted to the engineer for approval.
• Proposed alternative construction methods to cut costs and save customers money during the initial planning and bidding stages.
• Conducted field visits to perform final verification prior to the shop producing the components.
• Completed end-of-month pricing on time jobs, so financial documents can be prepared.
• Assisted accounts receivable in resolving late payment issues with customers.
Building Component Designer – Floor Truss Design Team Leader (June 1993 – May 2004)
W. Kost Manufacturing, Co., Gilberts, Illinois
I started as a design engineer creating truss framing plans and designing floor and roof truss systems based on customer blueprints and specifications. After designing trusses, I put together cutting lists for the shop. Sized and supplied pre-engineered lumber products and hangers as need. Other duties involved contacting customers to resolve problems or gathering additional information to complete jobs, as well as reviewing the effects of my work on other aspects of the building. I worked on residential and commercial projects ranging from small tract housing to million-dollar customized homes, hotels and schools.
