Title: Urban Design Intern (Graduate)
Route 1 & Route 27 Corridor Study:
The Edison Route 1 and Route 27 Corridor Smart Growth Planning Initiative is a vital piece of the overall effort necessary to revitalize corridors and enhance personal mobility and livability in Edison. The Route 1 and Route 27 corridors are significant thoroughfares for this part of the state.
Duties:
- Analyze the current land use pattern along the two major corridors (Route 1 and Route 27).
- Examine the adequacy of the transportation network to support current and future redevelopment plans, as well as to enhance the safety and accessibility of the corridor for all modes and people of all ages and abilities.
2. May 2008 – December 2008: Township of Edison, Edison, New Jersey
Title: Graduate Intern (Urban Design)
- Dealt with various planning and zoning issues and made recommendations for mixed use of retail and office buildings as a development of a former brown field site.
- Elaborated the idea of shared parking in the mixed-use development.
- Use of under utilized properties (such as a former parking lot) as a food court to create a public space, which has been appreciated by the Mayor Jun Choi. Appeared in New Jersey Star Ledger featuring – “NJIT graduate student lending her skills to improve Township of Edison”.
3. August 2007 – January 2009:
Department of Infrastructure Planning - New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey
Title: Post professional candidate for the Infrastructure Studio team
Gained experience working on several urban and infrastructure planning projects as described below:
Planning Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) for the city of Newark:
- Planned different BRT corridors throughout the city, determining the location for the BRT stops & stations by analyzing community needs.
- Development of TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and connecting Newark Liberty International airport and a port of Elizabeth to the rest of the city with the purpose of providing integrated transit system to the city of Newark, New Jersey.
- Idea was to develop the city as an Aerotropolis. The BRT project is a future proposal for Newark, NJ by NJ Transit.
Strategic Plan for the city of Newark as a sustainable city :
- Proposed a Sustainable Development Strategy for the city of Newark. Used above-mentioned BRT system as a tool for the strategic planning through out the city.
- This exercise included the reuse of the vacant property in the city as green buildings. The idea was to make the city greener and livable to bring the lost population back to the city and develop the concept of - “Live near the Work and Public Transportation”.

- Design of the sustainable BRT options including- “Green BRT stops”- through out the city.
- The recycle program and a concept of growing organic food locally were the subsidiary components of the sustainable proposal for the city of Newark, NJ.
- All the graphics for the presentation were prepared in Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Reactivation of NJ-Transit West Trenton Line:
- This is a project of NJ-Transit, which is in the planning-phase at the moment. The former West Trenton line of the passenger rail needs to be reactivated to connect the suburbs along this corridor to the New York City.
- Analysis of the probable locations for the six train stations on this line and a detailed study of each town/city where the stations were proposed, to determine the probable effects of the train station on surrounding neighborhood.
Presentation:
The final output of all the above mentioned projects were presented in front of community stakeholders including Mayor Cory A. Booker, officials from NJ Transit and graduate students with an Urban Planning major from Rutgers University at NJIT, Newark, NJ.
4. August 2004 – August 2007: Architect Sanjeev Joshi Associates, India
Title: Project Architect
-Development of the major urban design projects such as a multi facility transportation center, a metro train station, an office building, high-end housing proposals, a five star hotel, a school and a museum.
-Preparation of primary studies of the region and site analysis leading to conceptual design proposals for the project.
- Development of the site lay out (parking / circulation pattern and landscaping) for the assigned projects.
- Monitoring execution of the construction projects on the construction site.
-Preparation of contract documents.
-Development of construction drawings using AutoCAD 2006.
-Presentation of the architectural projects using computer aided design techniques.
Projects:
Office Building - “SADBHAV” at Ahmedabad City, India:
- Design and development of the floor plans of the building and furniture layouts for each floor. The primary materials used for the construction were RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) and steel.
- Development of all the details and working drawings for the project.
Metro Train Station - Shastri Park Station at Delhi, India:
- Space planning for the concourse level of the building.
- Preparation of all the necessary construction documents and construction drawings using AutoCAD2006.
School Building at Dahisar , Mumbai, India:
- Designed the floor plans and sections of the building.
- Design of three different alternates for the elevation of the building including three-dimensional rendering of all of them to make the final decision.
Multi Facility Bus Terminal at Vadodara, India:
- Since this was an urban design project, I prepared the detailed study of the surrounding neighborhood.
- Design and development of the site lay out, including the circulation pattern for the bus traffic and different user group coming to the building.
Museum – “ Karnavati Heritage” at Ahmedabad, India:
- Design of the entire project including floor plans, exhibition areas, sections and elevations of the building.
- Production of all the necessary construction drawings using AutoCAD 2006. Restaurant – “ Icy Spicy” at Vidyanagar, India :
- Development of the landscape design for the outside eatery of the restaurant.
- All the landscape renderings were produced by hand.
Five Star Hotel:
- Design and development of the site lay out and the orientation of the guest rooms.
- Space planning and the circulation pattern for the guests; service areas and an emergency escape plan as well.
- Study of all the safety standards and implementation of them in the in the proposal.
- Space planning for the guest rooms and suite layouts. All the necessary drawings were prepared by hand.
Multi specialty Hospital at Vadodara, India:
- Design of the 250- bed multi specialty hospital as a final year thesis project with Ar. Chandravadan Pathak worked as my thesis guide.
- Site analysis, conceptualization of the project, design development, preparation of construction drawings, preparation of presentation material including a physical model of the project.
Residence for Mr. Nilesh Patel at Vadodara, India :
- Design of the entire project.
- Supervision of the onsite construction activities.
- Client meetings to discuss the design stages and selection of materials.
