PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
ITW RANSBURG, Toledo, OH 1996-2009
Senior Design Engineer
Defined project scope and target market business opportunities. Directed and designed products with strong customer involvement: prototype, fielded test, and work through product launch. Trained customers, coating suppliers and internal personnel on safe function methods. Seven years of injection molding experience. 18 years of plastic part design.
· Designed industry changing powder-coating applicators for Chrysler DCX. These applicators doubled flow rate, increased first pass transfer efficiency and eliminated applicator caused defects while reducing finishing floor space by ~50% and reducing initial capital requirements by ~30%.
· Team Leader that rapidly developed electronic and pneumatic robot mounted control panels and plural component metering controls. Control packaging reduced cost by matching in house manufacturing skill sets with component design.
· Developed “Blue Printing Process†targeting Large Truck manufacturers’ finishing needs. This process is used to define new products / services with sustainable growth prospects. Decisions based on this data provide a focused path to delight customers and outpace competitors by identifying unmeet and unspoken customer needs.
· Awarded 11 patents associated with manual spray guns, automatic spray guns and an air hose fitting. Sales for these products exceeded $20M. 10 patents pending that change current processes and pumps.
· Project Manager for an Abated Spray Booth system that included blowers, multiple burners and logic controls and met FM and CSA construction standards. This project blended development team experts located in Punta Gorda Florida, Atlanta Georgia, Defiance Ohio, and Barrie Ontario.
· Developed spray gun that coats “Kellogg’s Shredded Mini Wheatâ€. This project had high visibility through local plant management and senior corporate managers of Kellogg’s management because of impact to production capability.
· Designed automotive spray system for Honda of Canada which included robots, electrostatic spray guns, plural component metering systems, pneumatic controls and PLC’s.
· Assembled automatic machines, fabricated robot workstations, and prototype robot parts.
· Designed and built an electric six-axis robot for Washtenaw Community College.
· Developed a process changing powder applicator for the automotive industry and other high volume applications (Jeep (Supplier Park) and Tesla Automotive).
· Studied, defined, and launched large wood manufacturing liquid coating delivery equipment needs. Designed pump components and valve components.
· Managed consumable products line for finishing; eliminated slow moving products and combined low volume products into high volume. Simplified packing to allow efficient out sourcing with greater value and ease of use. Introduced new products from sister divisions with no development cost.
