Overview: Experienced senior finance executive with high-level entrepreneurial experience; most recently involved in advanced MBA teaching and academics. Previously an investment banker during the 1980’s specializing in M&A, then crossing over in the late 1980’s to the equity principal side (Private Equity). Began Internet experience in 1995, first as a corporate private investor, and ultimately as CEO of an Internet-enabled research outsourcing (KPO) company (London/Delhi). Significant business origination skills and business network as well as corporate restructuring experience. Participated in high-level corporate Board and Management meetings for 25+ years. Lived in New York City (1974-95) and London (1996-2001) with business experience in the UK, Europe, India, Hong Kong and the Middle East.
Current Objectives: Senior executive or academic position utilizing prior experience in Finance and/or the Internet and with a strong involvement in MBA education/administration and the ability to continue teaching and other academic endeavors in Finance, Knowledge Management/Outsourcing and Collaborative technologies and processes.
University and Public Sector Experience (2003-present):
Boston University (2009): Lecturer- Finance/Economics, MBA Program. Responsible for teaching Advanced Corporate Finance to two second-year student sections (40+ students). Granted permanent adjunct professor position after first semester of teaching.
Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (2004-06): Sector Lead- Financial Institutions (including banks, insurance companies and fund managers) for quasi-public agency reporting to the State Governor. Appointed Professor of Economics (Adjunct) at Brown University. Continued independent academic research thereafter (2007-08) in collaboration with two Boston-based university professors and former staff in Delhi.
Johns Hopkins University (2003-04)): Executive in Residence (MBA Program) and Professor of Finance (Adjunct). Paid by Johns Hopkins to teach Finance (M&A/Valuations) and to create the Dean’s Honors Course in Decision Analysis and Financial Strategy. IDEA Center teaching evaluation report showed teaching skills to have been in the top 15% overall at Johns Hopkins with "difficulty of subject matter†in the top 2% among graduate school courses.
Academic research (2003-present): Expanded academic endeavors in Knowledge Process Outsourcing (“KPOâ€) and, as an offshoot of earlier theoretical work (started in 2000), developed in 2005 an advanced KPO business workflow system known as "Dynamic:Knowledge/ Development:Collaboration", "D:K/D:C" or simply "kDc".
Based in part on Agile/Extreme Programming techniques, kDc is an Internet-enabled systematic global information and collaborative knowledge management process used in part to translate, record and transfer tacit (vs. explicit) knowledge using externalization (particularly metaphors); the system addresses some of the issues of traditional value chains that ignore intangibles associated with knowledge exchange (e.g. process knowledge and collaborative design) and has a wide range of of commercial, academic and government applications largely for time-sensitive complex projects across multiple work groups, locations and time zones with systematic control over distribution/security.
Internet Experience (1995-2002):
Global Telecom Ltd.- London and Delhi (8/00-12/02): CEO of Internet-enabled information research and knowledge development company headquartered in London with workforce of 100+ highly-skilled engineers/MBA’s/PhD’s located near Delhi (India). GTL was an early KPO business, enabled by technology, user familiarity/demand and available bandwidth, and was modeled closely after the McKinsey & Co. in-house research effort, which is also located in India. Former CEO of Axel Springer was an advisor to GTL and was selected as its non-executive Chairman.
AvidNetworks Inc.- New York (9/99-6/00): Managing Director (CFO, General Counsel and Director of Business Development) of this Internet start-up (tools and technology for content organization and management) founded by the former CEO of InfoSeek, and backed by Primedia, Readers Digest and Warburg Pincus. Began initial work on knowledge exchange, value networks, virtual teams and collaborative innovation in early 2000.
Investment Experience- New York and London (10/95-8/99): Core investor in About.com and 24/7 Media (highly profitable investments). Began Internet investment work in 1995 and reviewed 150+ investments in the US, UK and Continental Europe.
Big Flower Holdings- New York and London (10/95-12/99): Managing Director of leveraged buyout company. Acquired 28 companies and created an NYSE-traded $2 billion revenue company in media and advertising services with 4,500+ employees and 25 million square feet of production and service facilities across 44 locations in the US and UK. The company was structured as a major public leveraged buyout vehicle and was taken public through Goldman Sachs. The original institutional investment of $50 million cashed out for over 8x in less than four years (45% IRR). Investors included Goldman Sachs, Bankers Trust and Apollo. (Pursued investments in other industries with partner Ted Ammon (ex-KKR) until October 2001 while concurrently gaining senior level Internet and related management experience.)
Charterhouse Inc.- New York and London/other (1989-95): Managing Director, Merchant Banking. Senior member of transaction teams for both advisory and principal work. Gained senior bankruptcy/insolvency experience, including the position of acting CEO of Balfour Maclaine, a $1.8 billion revenue, publicly-traded company, and Senior Advisor to the State of New Jersey Casino Control Commission. (1989-92) Elected Chairman of the Committee of outside Directors of Lancer Industries (formerly MacLean Shipping) in a “going private†transaction of this $400 million revenue diversified holding company controlled by Joseph, Littlejohn & Levy. (1992-95)
Investment Banking Experience (1979-89):
• Director of Paribas, the French merchant banking group, with overall responsibility for M&A, Private Equity and Business Development as well as the Group’s equity principal activity in the U.S. (1986-89).
• Co-Head of Bankers Trusts’ M&A Group and a Member of its Corporate Finance Management Committee (1983-86).
• Developed 25+ transaction-based corporate relationships during the years 1983-89 with total M&A fee income in excess of $20 million (plus other corporate finance revenues).
Education:
Columbia Business School (MBA- Finance/Operations Research-1979). Paid by Columbia to teach advanced applied mathematics to other graduate students. Special projects included: Salomon Brothers (development and analysis of Treasury Futures (aka "the Derivative") for John Meriwether); and the Commodity Futures Institute (mathematical/concept development of the "Index Fund" for Dr. Frederick L.A. Grauer, former CEO of Wells Fargo Investment Advisors). Was also designated a "Reader" for Jan Mossin's "Red Book" which was the "next step" theoretical work on the Sharpe-Mossin-Lintner (CAPM) Model and observations on Market/Tangency/Optimal and Continuous Time (multi-period/multi-factor) Portfolios.
