A decorated commanding officer of a nuclear attack submarine with a crew of 130, I have a record of keeping the oldest $1B nuclear submarines in the Navy’s inventory working at peak performance levels. I have trained engineering crews in the maintenance and operation of the ship’s nuclear power plant. I consistently completed complex nuclear plant maintenance periods and overhauls within or under budget.
Effective supervision of naval nuclear power plant operations and maintenance
Planning and executing complex reactor plant maintenance periods
Crafting and delivering comprehensive technical training
Building and developing high performance operations teams
I improve crew performance by utilizing my leadership skills gained as both an engineer officer and later, as Commander of a nuclear attack submarine. In that role, I planned and executed one of the most successful submarine deployments. I developed a personal briefing for the President of the United States and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
I hold a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville. I have extensive project management experience with budgets ranging from a few million to over one billion dollars.
SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Under extreme operational stress, successfully analyzed a rod control system casualty. The analysis and subsequent repair and operational work-around allowed the mission to complete successfully and safely.
Qualified as an Engineer Officer for Nuclear Submarines. This required intensive theoretical study for three months and passing an eight-hour written examination. I was subsequently assigned as the Engineer Officer on a submarine that had seen two prior engineers not complete their tours.
Supervised a major depot refit period lasting over 6 months. The repairs included replacing two nuclear instrument detectors and two piping runs through the nuclear reactor’s secondary shield.
Supervised the spent nuclear fuel removal from three retiring nuclear attack submarines. Completed the removal of all propulsion plant and nuclear plant electronics in preparation for the de-commissioning of the three submarines.
Managed the design, development and installation of all non-propulsion plant electronics systems for the first Seawolf Class nuclear attack submarine. All of this was accomplished at over $40M below budget.
