List of Accomplishments at Lawndale School District
As a new employee at the age of 20, I was hired as a night custodian at Mark Twain Elementary. Within 10 months of my hire, I was then promoted to Senior Custodian. Until this day, no other person in the district at that age has been given the responsibility of maintaining a school campus.
In 1992, I was transferred to become the Senior Custodian for the Central Kitchen/District Warehouse. During my three years of experience there, I was given training on daily operations at the warehouse ranging from fork lift operation to deliveries and inventory.
In 1995, I was given a new assignment by my Director of Maintenance and Operations at the time, Mr. Lynn Wiegers. My new assignment was to transform one of the oldest schools in the district, F. D. Roosevelt Elementary, as it had a reputation for receiving complaints about the poor cleaning and safety conditions from administration, staff, and parents alike. During my assignment there the school received a visit from then State Superintendent, Delaine Eastin, which I then later received letter from her office praising the beauty and cleanliness of the school, especially considering its age.
Based off my exemplary work, I was then assigned to create an official Custodial Handbook with a set of best practice techniques and procedures for cleaning floors, carpets, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and exterior of the campus. This custodial handbook was to be given to all custodial employees including subs as a reference guide to ensure each campus meets the same high standards for which I expect at my own campus. I was also responsible for creating cleaning schedules to be distributed for the other Senior Custodians at the district
One of the additional assignments I was given was to oversee and participate in the custodial operations in support of special projects sponsored by the Los Angeles City and County (including the YMCA) in which several of our school campuses were leased out.
Another additional assignment I was given was to act as the floor care supervisor for the District Office. I organized a schedule which included a breakdown on waxing, spray buffing and cleaning. With the help of my night custodian, we worked to ensure the District Office floors remained immaculate.
Whenever the custodial department was short staffed during evening hours, Director Lynn Wiegers would call upon me to serve the district as part time sub to assist and give proper cleaning instructions to those custodians that were on site that evening.
When the district was approved for a $70 million bond for upgrades and modernization, 9 of our schools were under construction. Of those 9 schools, I was transferred to 4 of them to ensure proper maintenance at these sites. Because of my performance at the first three schools, my latest assignment was to the brand new $12.5 million school, Lucille J. Smith, where I am currently assigned as the Senior Custodian since the school opened in 2006.
