Undergraduate Projects
Energy Research Investigator September 2009 – May 2010 Rochester MA
• Phase I: Awarded $10,000 grant from the EPA’s P3 Program to investigate a fish grow-out facility and demonstrate the power and possibilities of innovative designs to simultaneously benefit people, prosperity, and the planet.
• Designed, model and optimize a system to replace a diesel generator with alternative energy sources while optimizing a partitioned aquaculture system (PAS) for improved flow. Reported the findings of the research in an extensive technical research report.
• Presented results of the project to a number of judges at the national EPA P3 competition in Washington D.C. On the basis of the research report and benchscale presentations, the project was awarded a Phase II $75,000 grant from the EPA to build a demonstration model to implement the design. Construction will take place in the summer of 2010.
Geotechnical (Flexible Pavement Design)
• Performed a feasibility study on highway subgrade evaluation and flexible pavement design for Route 136 in Bristol, RI.
• The design was based on the following laboratory experiments performed on the soil that would be used for the subgrade material. Determination of specific gravity, grain size distribution including hydrometer analysis, Atterberg limits, and moisture-density relations.
Water Resources (Well Field Design)
• Used population forecasts for Rhode Island for the next 50 years to determine water demand for Roger Williams University, then made calculations for the well field design.
Advanced Hydrology (Hydropower)
• Performed a study on hydropower potential in the Blackstone River Basin.
• Used USGS gagging station data to prepare flow duration curves, located potential dam sites using the National Inventory of Dams, adjusted the flow duration curve for pool storage and distance from gagging station, made power calculations, performed site investigation, and designed penstock, turbine and housing.
