ESPLANADE OF ALGONQUIN – PHASE II, ALGONQUIN, ILLINOIS – Design Engineer for a 49 acre mixed use development consisting of approximately 12 apartment buildings, 11 retail/office buildings, a clubhouse and a mass graded industrial site. Design tasks I completed included widening Boyer Road, staging the design for further future widening, grading and earthwork balance of the site, planning for future expansion, and utility design including storm water management.
TECHNY DEVELOPMENT, NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS – Design Engineer for multiple sites on a 768 acre mixed-use development at the northwest corner of Willow Road and Waukegan Road. The property is owned by the Society of the Divine Word and is leased to and developed by a variety of developers. Engineering services I helped provide included designing and permitting turn lanes and accesses to Willow and Waukegan Roads, designing several miles of new roads, and designing several storm water storage basins. Highlights of the development include: Crate and Barrel’s Corporate Headquarters; Willow Festival and Willow Festival Annex, life-style retail and entertainment developments, Five Seasons Sports Club, a professional office development, and; three residential developments, comprising 500 homes.
CENTRAL MARKET REDEVELOPMENT, ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Design Engineer for the high profile Central Market Development in downtown Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. When completed, the 13-acre project will include a 53 story luxury hotel, a 58 story office tower and an 88 story residential tower. The towers will be surrounded by modern retail stores and a traditional Arabian souk. My responsibilities were designing grading and drainage for the site, and determining the layout of the surrounding and internal roadways, one of which will include a six-lane roadway through a building. The main challenge of this project was the coordination between many other firms located in the United States, London, Germany, Italy, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia.
NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT, CENTENNIAL BEACH IMPROVEMENTS, NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS – Civil Design Engineer for the Naperville Park District’s project to improve traffic flow, improve handicap access, and renovate and expand existing facilities at the Centennial Beach pool. Integrating modern utilities into the project, such as underground storm water storage, presented many challenges because the facility was originally constructed in the 1930’s from a quarry. The project’s close proximity to the DuPage River also created challenges as the beach itself is part of the river’s floodplain.
MCDONALD’S RESTAURANTS, VARIOUS LOCATIONS – Design Engineer for multiple sites ranging from 0.5 acres to 2.5 acres. I assisted in the design and coordination of land planning services, ALTA & topographic surveys, environmental assessments, soil explorations, retaining wall design, traffic studies, storm water management and general civil engineering. I streamlined the process to achieve final permits and approvals. This work included managing other consultants and regularly reporting the status of each project back to the client. Meeting McDonald’s National Standards and handicap accessibility requirements presented many challenges, especially on smaller sites.
VILLAGE OF DEERFIELD, DEERBROOK MALL SANITARY SEWER RE-ROUTING, DEERFIELD, ILLINOIS – Civil Design Engineer for a project to re-route sanitary sewer flow from a large suburban mall. The sanitary sewer serving the Deerbook Mall flows to an aging lift station that was becoming a maintenance problem for the Village of Deerfield. Re-routing the sewer would save both the Mall and the Village usage fees and maintenance costs. My task was to design a new sewer that would redirect flow to a new lift station while utilizing all of the existing building service connections and make use of as much of the old pipe network as possible. This lift station would connect to a new sewer augured under Illinois Route 43 and connect to an existing MWRD sewer.
CVS PHARMACY, NORTHERN ILLINOIS – Design Engineer for the design and permitting of numerous pharmacies throughout the Chicago land area. Key services I helped with included: due diligence, site planning, geometrics, grading, detention, utility layout and permitting. Site locations included Aurora, Northbrook, New Lenox, Lakemoor, Downers Grove, and multiple City of Chicago sites.
