I have significant experience in commercialization and investments in the energy sector. I have served as financial and business development advisor for 20+ mergers and acquisitions of electric and gas distribution companies. I focused on nuclear power earlier in my career, project managing at Booz Allen for large energy assignments with Combustion Engineering, Westinghouse, US Dept. of Energy, United Technologies, Allied-Signal and British Gas.
More recently, I have been an innovator for increasing market opportunities in the wholesale electric sector for public and cooperative electric utilities. My skill set is expansive and I can contribute immediately by:
ï± Establishing vision and strategic direction
ï± Forming alliances and negotiating/closing deals
ï± Raising capital for expansion and capital equipment
ï± Identifying and leading entry into untapped markets
ï± Evaluating and assessing new energy technology
I hold an MBA in Finance from University of Chicago Booth School of Business and BSEE from the University of Texas. My training in the US Navy as a Nuclear Submarine Officer has served me well – I can assemble, motivate and manage diverse teams. I have published and spoken often on the topic of energy and sustainability.

Won major funding for first study of renewable energy options available in Kansas. Opened The Energy Foundation. Delivered plan to Governor, who used it to strike bargain with coal-fired plant advocates.

Established financial advisory in cooperative/municipal utility space to assist in M&As, advising 20+ utilities and managing six acquisitions. Established first cooperative utility holding company.
Established wholesale electric risk management process. Changing regulations meant greater risks and rewards for wholesale electric purchasers. Established an early risk-adjusted electric portfolio. Gave guidelines for traders and corporate policy positions. Spun off approach as free standing entity, ACES Power Marketing.
Saved client $5M on fuel cell venture. Retained to review $5M investment for distribution rights to utility fuel cell. Revealed technological breakthroughs were needed for reliability and durability goals. Recommended client not invest after full review. Development failed to achieve critical milestones and commercial status was not achieved.
Earned 5% savings on utility costs. Electricity restructuring in California created opportunity for retail customers to arrange bulk electricity purchases from third party providers. Approached agribusiness organizations to assist in electricity procurement. Gained approval, achieving 5% savings for yearly electric costs with no risk to members.
Played key role leading utility out of Chapter 11. Member of National Rural Electric Cooperative Association entered into Chapter 11 due to cost burden of nuclear plant. Teamed with CEO and team of experts to craft plan to resolve the impairment. Allowed utility to emerge from bankruptcy with unanimous consent of all parties.
Vice President, American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE). Recruited in 2008 to lead all analytical policy work for 501c3 renewable energy advocacy group.
Practice Leader, Management Consulting Services, 1995-2008. Focused on the needs of public and cooperative electric utilities. Principal, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, 1989-1995. Manager of consulting services for national trade association of 1000+ electric cooperatives. Led all management audits, financial workouts and merger studies. Established Best Practices pilot program.
Earlier career: Consultant, Sr. Associate, Booz Allen Hamilton. Project manager for large energy assignments. Became point person on projects in the USA and United Kingdom in both the private and government sectors.
