Syska Hennessy Group Construction Los Angeles, California
Safety Award China Lake, CA 2010
• NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER, China Lake, CA -- $5.8M design/build project to install new Photovoltaic Arrays on Carports in three locations. This project was a design build job stemming from ARRA funds and was required to provide the greatest kW performance capable for the area available to the sites. It resulted in joint design between electrical and PV engineers along with crucial structural conditions because of seismic and wind loading. The biggest concern that had to be coordinated was in the sectioning off of the parking areas to keep the workforce accommodated during the construction phases. 2009 - 2010
• NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER, China Lake, CA -- $5.8M design/build project to rebuild/replace Airfield Lighting. This project included replacing the runway and taxiway lighting circuits at an active military facility. Replacement and new installation of old lighting fixtures with new LED fixtures to meet lighting level requirements while lowering the overall power needs. Additionally changing from old regulators controlling the circuits to new electronic units capable of far greater operational ability. Midway through the project the client decided to add replacement of 297 additional runway light cans to meet FAA regulations 2009-2010
• NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER, China Lake, CA -- $3.9M design/build project to replace Medium Voltage Substation in Family Housing area. This was a replacement in kind project which removed old technology equipment with newer materials and greatly expanded the load capabilities of the system. The original substation was an outdoor facility with the typical overhead gantry setup. The newly designed facility utilized a structure to house the distribution equipment and underground ductbanks to feed to and from the station, providing a cleaner and safer installation. 2009 – 2010
• NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION, Moffett Field, CA -- $135K Upgrade Fire Alarm System. Installation of a new fire alarm system on an existing facility to include smoke and heat detectors in a fully addressable system replacing the old system which relied on manual pull stations at the exits as the only means of notification to the site fire department. 2010
• NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION, Moffett Field, CA -- $1.2M Rebuild Electrical Distribution System, construction project to replace medium voltage distribution, substation and distribution system at Building N227 in support of the Wind Tunnel Facility. This project started out with the client submitting 31 additional drawings at the pre-construction meeting due to design errors not identified during the bidding phase. Additionally, work had to be in-place and the cutover made during a one week period that kept changing as the project progressed. Work completed and the systems were brought on-line without complications. Some additional work was added to the project after initial start-up. 2010
• NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER, China Lake, CA -- $2.5M design/build project to replace Medium Voltage Substation in China Lake Propulsion Laboratory and Salt Wells areas. Project to replace two old medium voltage substations with known hazardous materials and potential for failure due to age and lack of maintenance with new facilities utilizing new methods and equipment to provide systems that would allow for continued development work without fear of catastrophic power failure. 2009-2010
• NAVAL AIR STATION, Lemoore, CA -- $2.82M design/build project to install new Photovoltaic Arrays on roofs of five buildings. ARRA funded project to help reduce the carbon footprint of the base. Project entailed placing framework with panels on the roofs of five buildings, including four housing quarters. Upon initial site construction visit ACM was discovered in the sprayed-on ceilings of two of the buildings. This resulted in bringing in additional trade contractors to abate and then repair the quarters. In addition all furnishings had to be removed, stored and replaced within the rooms. 2009
• TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Fairfield, CA -- $3.8M construction project to replace medium voltage infrastructure. This project went through several issues that changed the nature of the work. This was the result of discovering that most of the existing underground vaults were flooded and that the water tested as contaminated. In order to alleviate this it was proposed to completely abandon these vaults and install a separate 12kV system which would use new transformers at the various buildings being supported and allow the Air Force to retain the existing dual-voltage transformers for use as spares for existing 4kV or the new12kV circuits without the need of dealing with the contamination. The project was de-scoped instead and the existing 4kV circuits were left in-place while cabling from the new 12kV circuits was run to the dual mode transformers. It will have to be addressed later. 2009 – 2010
• CHANNEL ISLANDS AIR NATIONAL GUARD STATION, Port Hueneme, CA -- $300K construction project to construct a Munitions Storage Area. This project had been bid out three previous times and in each case came in over the allocated funding. During work on a different project at the base, I suggested that they consider using pre-fabricated structures instead of building CMU facilities. This resulted in the base re-bidding the project a fourth time and being able to perform the work necessary to relocate their storage from adjacent Navy facilities that had been condemned. The project entailed Civil and underground utilities to provide the elevated location in what had been a flood plain within the base. During the construction the sudden rains that occurred, coupled with the loss of the Base’s drainage pump stations resulted in a small lake forming around 1/3rd of the site. A SWPPP was submitted to the State and approved prior to this event. 2009 – 2010
• NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION Moffett Field, CA -- $94K to add Secondary Chilled Water cooling system into existing computing facility. Addition of chilled water lines and manifolds under a raised-floor in a working Computer facility to support new water-cooled servers. 2009

Repainting the hold-short lines on taxiways adjacent to one of the main runways at Moffett Federal Air Field, while the field was active and scheduling to paint new lines on the main runway to allow for practicing short field activities by Combat C-130 aircraft for the Guard Bureau. 2009

• SEPULVEDA AIR NATIONAL GUARD STATION, Van Nuys, CA -- $350K project to abate and demolish three missile silos and five buildings. This project entailed removing ACM from existing Nike silos and CMU structures. Because my demolition contractor was capable of removing the scrap metal from the silos, the cost I was able to submit allowed for the entire project to be accomplished rather than a single silo and building. 2008 – 2010
• NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION, Moffett Field, CA -- $208K Demolish Building N208. Removal of an underground concrete facility including the surface structure as well as two feet below the surface. Abatement of Lead Paint was accomplished around the perimeter of the structure then it was saw-cut to allow for demolition of the roof and upper section. After demolition a new parking lot was constructed above the location where the structure was demolished. 2008
