Vestas American Wind Technologies (Mar, 2008 to Aug, 2009)
(April thru August, 2009) Vice President, Project Management – From April 2009, responsible for the successful project execution of 600+ Wind Turbines for a portfolio of VAWT clients. Turbine types included V80, V82 and V90. Project Execution included Engineering, Procurement, Assembly, Testing, Commissioning and enabling SCADA facilities. Total portfolio value at $1.5B USD.
Achievements in the period:
1) Improved Project gross margins by 6% or $90M to the portfolio. Additional opportunities still available at departure
2) Matured the Project Portfolio management team – 6x planners/schedulers,13x PMs, 3x PM Directors.
3) Supported continued evolution of Special Projects – field upgrades to Turbine main components.
4) Continued to perfect the PM software tools and process opportunities. Software integrated included SAP PS, Primavera 6 and other legacy information systems and processes. (MS Office, MS Access)
5) Supported the project closeout process for the 2008 projects ($100M USD).
6) Total Project portfolio contained over 500 field personnel performing Project and Special Project scope.
(August, 2008 thru April, 2009) Director, Special Projects – (from August, 2008) Responsible for the field upgrades/replacements of over 900 mechanical components on VAWT client assets. Assets included Generators and Gearboxes, both V82 and V90 vintage. No penalty$ were incurred during these exchanges, due to my teams’ efforts. All exchanges resulted in minimal service interruption for these assets. Supported upgrades to over 500+ sets of V82 rotors. Additional upgrades for lubrication, bearing systems and blade accumulators.
Achievements in the period:
1) Turned around a ‘highly distressed’ upgrade campaign into completed work and success. The upgrade program was being managed by the VAWT O&M department, unsatisfactorily. We started Special Projects from scratch. Hiring new PMs, planners and support personnel.
2) Matured the Project Portfolio management team – 2x planners/schedulers, 7x PMs, 1x PM Directors. (350+ 3rd party maintenance personnel were contracted to support the seasonal project cycle)
3) Received very positive feedback from many of our key clients regarding effectiveness and level of effort of the Special Projects team.
4) I was promoted to VP of Projects, due to the effectiveness of the SP team and my additional qualifications.
(March, 2009 thru August, 2008+) Director, Project Management – (from March, 2008) Supported the development of the Project Management process for VAWT. Supported the delivery thru commissioning of 800+ wind turbines to VAWT clients.
Achievements in the period:
1) Conducted an audit, per the PMBOK, of the current VAWT Project Management processes and tools. A prioritized improvement plan was developed and implemented, in conjunction with the SVP of Operations.
2) Developed and delivered standard processes and tools for Wind Turbine Project delivery.
3) Delivered new PM tools to the team, including SAP PS, Primavera 6.0 and a retrofit of legacy processes and tools. These tools would manage resource details and accumulate to portfolio level reports.
4) Supported, with a PM Director peer, the successful delivery of 800+ Wind turbines in the 2008 season. $2B in gross revenue.
5) Supported a global rollout of the SAP PS to other global locations within Vestas. (Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America)
Owner, Drago Adventures (Mar, 2004 to Mar, 2008) Formed an investment company in Panama. Built a multi-million dollar Eco-Lodge in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The Lodge took 18 months to develop and is now in its fourth year of operation. The project was funded privately. It now operates as one of the best Eco Lodges in the area (Solar, wind power, septic, water collection) We also operate a boat tour, fishing, hiking, property management company within our area. Bayfield Realty and Partner, Freeman Creek Trading Co. (May, 2005 to Mar, 2008) Worked as a licensed Realtor in state of CO, during the low season of our Lodging business in Panama. (typically, May to October) The Trading Co. is a private investment business. The company would buy, fix, rent, and sell a range of residential properties in the Durango, CO area.
AT&T (Network Systems)/Lucent Technologies – (Oct, 1992 thru Feb, 2004)
(Oct, 2001 thru Feb, 2004) Director of Program Management for the Verizon International Account. (Hunt Valley, MD) Responsible for all projects within the account, both National and International deployments, as well as, Technology testing within the laboratories of the client. The VZI account was deployed to 45 different countries on 5 continents. (A $500M contract) Delivered three Network Operations Centers (SCADA) in London, Denver and Sydney.
(Sep, 2001) – The Program Director responsible for the post Sep-11, 2001 restoration of the lower Manhattan networks following the disaster. Restored the NYSE in days, including the lower borough areas within months. Received special recognition from Lucent for my efforts. All billing $ was completed and collected, successfully.
(Jan, 1999 thru Sep, 2000) Director of Program Management for the MCI/Worldcom account. (Dallas, TX) Responsible for all projects within the account, both National and International deployments. Supported Advanced Technology testing within the Dallas testing laboratories of the client. ($200M in annual sales)
(July, 1994 thru Dec, 1998) AT&T/Lucent was awarded the TEP6 project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ($4.5B at award).
(July, 1994 thru July, 1995) Sr Financial Consultant - Expatriated with AT&T to support with finance and Project systems mobilization. (first year) Developed bilingual (English/Arabic) Quantity and Financial tracking system for the Outside Plant portion of the TEP6 program in MS Access.
(July, 1995 thru July, 1997) Manager, Project Controls The MIS, mentioned previously, was redeveloped in POWERBUILDER, an object oriented software, to incorporate all facets of the TEP6 program (Civil Works, Microwave, Wireless, Wire line, Optics). The redevelopment was made to support the increased volume of transactions across the TEP6 portfolio. ORACLE was the database engine to support transaction volume. PowerBuilder was the Windows User Interface. The system was further expanded to incorporate tracking of the entire Project Life Cycle, from initial engineering thru acceptance testing.
(July, 1997 thru December, 1998) Sr Mgr, Program Mgmt Supported a team of project managers for the Digital Microwave project, a $100M cross Kingdom project to link the more remote villages. Supported Project Controls mobilization/s in Jakarta (Indonesia), Sydney and Melbourne (Australia). These latter projects were all wireless CDMA projects of $300M each.
Received special recognition and ‘letter of recommendation’ from Dennis Hallet – Managing Dir. for Bechtel (Mid East/Africa) The TEP6 project was ‘up scoped’ to over $8B. Received ‘Special Recognition’ from the President of the TEP6 Project for my service and dedication to the project and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

As you have noticed from my resume’, I have travelled, studied or worked within International circles for almost 30 years. I am quite comfortable with establishing new relationships or mobilizing complex projects in very challenging environments. I have managed software and infrastructure projects successfully.

Married – 13 years with a beautiful 9 year old daughter. My wife is from Toronto, Canada area. A registered nurse. We met during our mutual assignments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
