Michael Golec was raised in San Diego County where he grew up enjoying various outdoor action sports as well as team sports. He took this competitive spirit and moved to Arizona to focus on his education in architecture at Arizona State University. Michael excelled in their highly accredited architecture program creatively learning analytical thinking and problem solving skills with a visual emphasis. He rounded his education at their nationally top ranked Del E. Webb School of Construction and graduated head of class with a master of science in facility and construction management. These multi-disciplinary degrees laid the foundation for his passion towards responsible and aesthetic development.
During architecture school Michael spent the summers as an apprentice carpenter to understand the practical application of classroom lessons and he worked as a design architect for Martinez + Cutri Architects specializing in urban multi-family and commercial neighborhood projects. While in graduate school, Michael worked for a multi-family general contractor before accepting a position with the acclaimed Kitchell Contractors where he was immersed in their training programs on quality control, risk management, safety, information systems, industry procedures, estimating, value-engineering, budgeting, and preconstruction services. Michael’s hands on management approach and natural leadership style quickly advanced him to the position of Project Manager working for Kitchell’s divisions of Custom Homes, Mexico, and Master Planned Communities (MPC). MPC managed the development of golf course communities including the infrastructure, golf course construction, and vertical buildings. MPC determined and controlled the overall budget, the master schedule, hired all the prime contractors, managed all contracts, large material procurement, and conducted all meetings.
Michael was quickly recruited by Hayhoe Construction specializing in the development of golf course clubhouses and associated buildings. Here Michel worked closely with the owner of the company and several award winning architects to fine tune his preconstruction estimating, project management skills, and learned the insights to running a successful company. In 2002 Michael committed full-time to his design/ build development company with overwhelming success. His responsibilities include: all phases of design, permitting, land acquisition, development feasibility studies, finance sourcing, consultant management, municipality coordination, and site development. He began the pursuit to alternative building methods over ten years ago and has built a reputation as a leader in sustainable building practices.
Most recent project includes the assemblage of 5 parcels in Tucson, Arizona adjacent the University of Arizona to accommodate 318 beds for a $25M midrise Class A, LEED certifiable student housing project. Roles include due diligence process, financial feasibility studies, land acquisition, overall development plan, programming and parameters, conceptual design, entitlements, and presentations to mayor, council, and neighborhood groups. Phase II and III assemble 10 parcels to support an additional 800 beds for an estimated $65M project. These phases are currently seeking plan amendment approval.
Michael’s 15 years of design and construction experience has taken him to 2 countries, 6 states, and 31 cities. He has collectively managed $500 million in design/build/development projects. He has served as capacity of owner’s representative, construction project manager, project architect, and site supervisor. Several of his projects have been featured in multiple publications.
