District Manager/Sr. Safety Engineer
Recruited to set-up and manage the Safety Consulting Division for this National Forensic Engineering, Fire Investigation, Environmental and Specialty Consulting Firm. While employed by this division of GAB Robins, I served as the Senior Safety Engineer and the District Manager for the Evansville, Indiana area.
In addition to starting the Safety Consulting Division, responsibilities included managing this office, as well as supervision of an eclectic staff of environmental and safety consultants, trainers and onsite construction safety managers, providing environmental, safety, training, industrial hygiene and safety management services to EFI and GAB Robins clients on a national basis.
Other duties included safety consulting, providing litigation support, training and revising the EFI Global, Inc. corporate safety and training programs. Also designed training to address unique hazards encountered by EFI Global engineers and GAB Robins adjusters, responding to Hurricane Katrina, conducting audits and structural investigations.

Division Manager/Sr. Safety Engineer
Recruited by Elite (a firm owned by the largest client of my former employer), to start and manage a Safety Consulting Division for this Regional Environmental and Hazardous Materials Management Firm. Position was Division Manager, where I directed a staff of construction safety managers, trainers and other safety professionals.
Approximately 60% of business was in the form of onsite construction safety management, whereas Elite’s construction safety professionals would serve as site safety managers for various construction companies and as owner’s safety reps for several large organizations. I also served as an onsite safety manager on many larger projects, which required a highly experienced safety professional. During this time, I functioned as the onsite safety manager for the area’s largest general contractor on the largest Greenfield construction site in North America.
Additional duties included safety program development and employee training for construction and general industry clients, safety project engineering, as well as training and supervision of the company’s HazMat team. I drafted safe operating procedures for the largest chemical facility in the region, and provided all of the industrial hygiene program development and site sampling for a new state of the art steel rolling mill, built in Southern Indiana.

Responsible for total management and operation of this firm, specializing in onsite construction management and employee training. Established a client base and recruited safety professionals to rapidly grow this new organization. A significant amount of initial business was to provide on-site safety management services to the parent construction firm, as well as other construction companies throughout the southeastern US. In addition to supervising a staff of safety professionals, I was also onsite safety manager for a number of major general contractors on some of the largest construction sites in the US.
Additional duties included safety program development and training, safety engineering, and assisting in the development of a contractor training program for one of the largest electric utilities in the region.

Merged my safety consulting firm with a local environmental consulting and remediation company to form a full-service safety and environmental consulting practice. This firm quickly developed annual revenues in excess of 1 million, with interests in safety and environmental consulting, emergency spill response, construction and hazardous waste management. Significant projects included National Priority Listed (Superfund) Site remediation and onsite contractor safety management for large construction projects.
Personal contributions to this organization not only included day-to-day management, but also supervision of a staff of eight professionals. Much of the group’s safety consulting work involved program development and employee training for general industry clients, and providing onsite construction safety mangers and training for the local construction industry.
Personal consulting contributions included providing safety engineering and program development services to clients in the aluminum industry and serving as onsite safety manager for a large general contractor at a major construction project.

Relevant Project Experience
Post Incident Program Evaluation and Developing Operating Procedures
Contracted by one of the World’s largest specialty manufacturers to assist in post accident investigation and evaluation of programs for their ULTEM Resin Monomer plant, following a catastrophic explosion. Project involved working with plant engineering and maintenance personnel in evaluating and revising maintenance and operating practices and procedures for this plant. Special emphasis was placed on PSM compliance for maintenance and contractors. (While contracted by this client, performed similar reviews and directed onsite contractor safety for a number of turnarounds at their Phenol plant.)
Contractor Safety
Served as the onsite contractor safety manager on a number of large turnaround projects at this 192,000 barrel per day refinery. Coordinated contractor functions with plant safety and maintenance personnel to ensure quality and safety of projects. Much of the work was process-related and strong emphasis was placed on PSM programs.
Contractor Safety
Functioned as the onsite contractor safety manager for several large, long-term civil projects during construction of a 1,750,000 ft2 steel rolling facility (Greenfield project). Personally responsible the safety of over 400 employees involved in various capacities of excavation, concrete work, piping, equipment installation and commissioning. This project involved the extensive use of heavy excavating equipment, mobile cranes and involved specialized rigging. Duties also included competent person training for personnel in the areas of excavations and rigging.
Process Safety Management Program Development
Contracted by an international energy firm, to conduct relevant surveys and to develop the Process Safety Management program for their new state-of-the-art ethanol production facility. Project also included HAZWOPER training for the site’s emergency response team.
Safety Engineering for the World’s Largest Engineering Firms
Contracted as the Safety Engineer and “Fall Protection Specialist†for a multi-million dollar project involving the selection, design and installation of fall protection systems for client’s customer; a large international aluminum producer. Responsibilities included hazard identification and analysis, directing field surveys, developing safe-standard operating procedures, specifying fall protection equipment to be utilized, providing application advice to the contract design firm and providing fall protection and rescue training to plant personnel.
Program Development for Large Aluminum Smelter in Iceland
Assisted the Safety Department at this smelter after it was purchased by a Major US Aluminum Producer, in the review of all safety and training programs. Participated in safety audits and the development and enhancement of new safety and training programs. Conducted accident investigation training for local plant management personnel. Held discussions with AOSH (Iceland’s OSHA) management regarding suggestions for improvements to government sponsored training for powered industrial truck operators. Experienced opportunity to blend established US principles of safety into a uniquely different culture and working environment.

Greenfield Construction Site for Large Steel Rolling Mill
Directed an onsite Safety Management Team, supervising safety for several prime contractors at one of the largest construction sites in North America. Project achieved over two million man-hours without a lost time accident. Additional responsibilities included extensive hazard assessments, as well as selecting equipment and systems to control site fall hazards.
Industrial Hygiene for Large Steel Rolling Mill
Conducted the “baseline†data accumulation and analysis to develop an Industrial Hygiene Program for a new “state of the art†steel rolling mill in Southern Indiana. Project included considerations for several hazardous substances, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid and NOX concentrations, as well as temperature extremes. Also designed and implemented employee and contractor training programs to address potential hazards and exposures.
Programs & ISO 14001 for International Auto Parts Manufacturer
Instrumental in the development of a Corporate Safety and Training Program for this international parts manufacturer’s first U.S. operation. Was responsible for conducting initial hazard analysis of their facilities, designing an effective safety program and developing training plans to achieve compliance with applicable local, state and federal standards, while enhancing employee safety. Have continued to provide services to this client’s safety staff and executive management, by conducting safety auditing, safety program reviews, ISO 14001 auditing and OHSAS 18001 consultation.
Program Development for International Chemical Company
Retained as a Safety Consultant by this Global Chemical Company to review the safety and training programs of a recently purchased chemical manufacturing facility. Initial responsibilities included review of existing programs to ensure compliance with applicable standards. Also revised these programs, as necessary to attain conformance with the new owner’s industry-specific requirements and reflect their safety philosophy. Additional responsibilities included assisting in the development and presentation of new employee training programs, a plant-wide review of potential fall hazards and recommendation of personal fall arrest systems for site personnel and contractor employees.
Construction Safety for World’s Largest Aluminum Producer
Functioned as onsite Safety Engineer, representing a large national client, responsible for safety management of all contractor and subcontractor personnel involved in excavation and related construction of an underground accumulator pit, basement and associated concrete work. Project involved equipment mobilization, excavation and installation to a depth of over 80 feet, inside an existing structure, with significant ground water hazards. Served as client’s qualified person for review and selection of personal fall arrest systems and related safety equipment.
Program Development for International Real Estate Company
Retained as a Safety Consultant to one of the largest diversified commercial real estate services companies in the world, to conduct reviews and revisions to their Corporate Safety Programs, for their Building Management Division. This unit employs over 3,400, managing more than 30,000 properties, including 6,000+ banking and process centers for one of the largest banks in the US.
Reviews and revisions were directed to ensure applicability of safety programs in relation to the work being performed, compliance with OSHA Standards, then conducted audits of the of the programs to aid this client in measuring the effectiveness of their safety efforts

Chemical Reaction Hazard Identification for Heavy Plating Facility
Retained as a Safety Consultant to a large, international, heavy machining and chrome plating client. Project responsibilities included inventorying and classifying all chemicals and wastes onsite. A Chemical Reaction Hazard Matrix was then developed, listing all of the chemicals and wastes, with potential reactions that could be anticipated if the materials were to be mixed or otherwise come into contact with each other (e.g. in the waste stream).
System Safety Engineering for Large Aluminum Producer
Engaged by a regular client, (world’s second largest aluminum producer) to collect data and perform a Systems Safety and Reliability Study on a new automated molten metal level control system for one of their aluminum casting operations.
Process Safety Management Program for Aluminum Rolling Mill
Responsible for development, implementation, and related training for the Process Safety Management Program for this mill. One year project involving process with a large Chlorine storage and delivery system.
Systems Safety Engineering for National Coal Mining Company
Served as Safety and Project Engineer during design, manufacturing and commissioning phases of new underground mining equipment. Assisted with planning and design of equipment, as well as personally directed System Safety Engineering on all equipment and related components. Coordinated with the Washington, DC based Engineering Division of MSHA, to communicate design and field operating data in order to gain Agency approval for use of this equipment. Efforts contributed to MSHA approval of machinery, which is still being utilized in the mining industry on a worldwide scale. Also developed safety and training programs for operating personnel.
Civil & Safety Engineering for Underground Hazardous Waste Storage Facility
Responsible for re-design, implementation and management of all safety and training programs, roof control and ground control engineering systems for this two-hundred acre underground hazardous waste storage facility, located in an abandoned limestone mine. This national priority listed (Superfund) site contained over 1.4 million tons of salt cake fines (Aluminum Dross). Unique hazards included direction of heavy equipment operation and personnel in extremely unstable geological conditions, with water hazards and high ammonia concentrations. Additional responsibilities included the direction of explosives/blasting contractor in removal of over 2,000 yd3 of unstable overburden that was creating falling rock hazards at mine entrances. Duties included supervision of a 28 person, 40-Hour trained crew, performing remediation, facility modification and closure-related activities.
Safety & Worker’s Compensation for Large Coal Mining Company
Retained as Safety Consultant to review and revise safety, training and compliance programs for this mining company, with operations in several states. After initial review and development of loss control programs, effectively improved the Company’s lost time injury rate, decreased the average number of MSHA violations it received, and reduced workers’ compensation costs by over $100,000 in the first three months, after implementation of these programs.
Site Safety Management for Large General Contractor
Regularly retained by this large regional multidiscipline construction firm as a Site Safety Manager. Coordinate site safety activities, performing hazard evaluations and conduct employee training at many of the area’s largest manufacturing and processing facilities, as well as many coal fired utilities. Safety responsibilities include fall protection hazard evaluations and related equipment selection. Scope of work often involved over 300 employees per site/assignment.
